FAQ’s for Classes at RCC (Learn More)
Join a class with a fabulous instructor or work at your own pace through independent study. Our weekly sessional classes are open to anyone 15 and older, from complete beginners to those looking to expand their clay skills. Each session includes generous practice hours in our studio so you can reinforce what you learn.
Projects are limited to 15” in any direction. We encourage consistent attendance—sessions move quickly, and there are no make-up classes. However, you can always use your practice time to connect with classmates and instructors to build on what you have learned.
All participants use Clay Q&A, our online communication hub for kiln schedules, asking questions, studio events, deadlines, resources, and community Q&A.

Handbuilding & Soda: All Levels
Handbuilding & Soda: All Levels
Instructor: Alison Grevstad
Dates: April 1st-June 3rd
Time: Wednesdays, 10:00am-1:00pm
Fees: $525 (includes a full soda share. does not include tools, clay, or sales tax)
Explore the world of sculptural ceramics with Alison Grevstad in this all-levels morning class. Focus on animals, abstraction, or figures—deciding how realistic or simplified you want your work to be. Alison will share tips and techniques to capture gesture, personality, and nuance, helping you bring your critters and figures to life. This class encourages observation, experimentation, and creative expression at every skill level.
As an optional bonus adventure, each student will receive a full share in the soda kiln—a 6" x 6" x 12" box of ceramics fired during the 7th week (May 13th) at our sister studio, Rat City Studios. Soda firing is a dramatic process where soda ash is sprayed into the kiln at peak temperature, creating unpredictable and beautiful surfaces. Whether you choose the soda firing or stick with regular RCC firings, Alison will help you make the most of every stage of your work, sharing her passion for surface exploration throughout the session.
All Levels Welcome! You must be 15+ years of age to participate. This class is a great fit for those wanting to grow their skills with an instructor present to ask questions. There is a 15” maximum size, in any direction, when creating with clay at RCC.
Materials: Clay is $40 for new clay or at times we have recycled clay for sale for $20. This is a separate purchase from your class fee. Purchase clay ahead of time HERE.
Bring an apron, comfy clothes, a quart-sized container (like a yogurt container), and a beginner's set of tools to the first class.
Tool kits are available for purchase online or at Seattle Pottery Supply or Clay Art Center. Or here is another option on Amazon. The class fee includes all glazing materials, firings, and generous open-studio access for practice time.
About Alison Grevstad (she/her):
Alison Grevstad (she/her) is a Seattle-based ceramic and visual artist whose sculptural work is rooted in close observation of the natural world and an interest in surface, narrative, and material process. Drawing inspiration from landscape, ecology, and cultural storytelling, she uses clay as a way to explore form and meaning while amplifying underrepresented perspectives.
Alison has exhibited her work in galleries in Seattle and Arizona and has been an active member of the Pottery Northwest studio community for over a decade. She was a Visiting Artist at Rain City Clay in 2024 and served as Artist in Residence at Estes Park Center in Rocky Mountain National Park. Her practice spans sculptural and functional ceramics, with a particular interest in atmospheric firing and experimental surface development.
In this class, Alison guides students through sculptural approaches designed specifically for the soda kiln, encouraging thoughtful construction, surface exploration, and responsiveness to the firing process. This course is ideal for artists looking to deepen their relationship with clay, fire, and form.
