Independent Study

Optional Orientation: Sunday, March 29th at 5pm
RCC offers its well-appointed, welcoming space to independent study participants during our quarterly sessions. There is no instruction; you will have open-ended, self-directed studio time. Participants are responsible for following the communications on Clay Q&A to know about firings and deadlines.


Beginning Wheel Throwing

Get your wheels turning as you learn the basics of throwing pots on the potter's wheel. This class will get you familiar with the material of clay and introduce foundational wheel-thrown forms such as bowls and cups. Try out surface decoration with our colorful shop glazes, wax resist, and tape resist techniques.


All Levels Handbuilding

Get a jump start on spring in this all-levels handbuilding class with Heather Luedke! Create yard or patio themed projects like decorative plant markers, luminaries and more Heather will guide you through slip techniques—including painting, stenciling, and layering—to create interesting textures and raised surfaces. This form-and-surface-focused class is perfect for experimenting, having fun, and adding personalized ceramic art to your space.


Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding: All Levels

Come build Around the World! Jen will introduce a worldly collection of forms and projects to inspire. Pitchers from England, coffee sets from Turkey, sushi plates from Japan - this class blends wheel throwing and handbuilding to spark inventive, functional, and decorative creations with historical influence. This class is perfect for those just starting out, or continuing their journey in clay.


Wheel Throwing & Surface: All Levels

Bump up your throwing skills in this all-levels wheel-throwing class! Alice will share all her tips and tricks with you to throw a bit taller and throw a bit wider! Throw more and more! In addition, learn ways to accentuate your thrown pottery forms with carving and surface texture. There’s always more to learn. Stay curious!


Continuing Wheel & Handbuilding Blend

Tuesdays 6:00pm-9:00pm, $485
This intermediate ceramics class blends wheel throwing and handbuilding with a cozy, coffee/tea-forward focus. Led by Deb Schwartzkopf, students will build skills across multiple forming techniques while creating functional wares inspired by daily rituals—cups, canisters, ceramic spoons, and yes, even a coffee/tea pot. Emphasis will be placed on form, function, and personal refinement, with space to explore surfaces and details along the way. Clay, caffeine, and thoughtful making included.


Beginning Wheel Throwing

Join Brooke Felix for a welcoming introduction to wheel throwing, ideal for beginners new to clay or those looking to build on the basics. You’ll learn the essentials—wedging, centering, pulling walls, trimming, and adding handles—while making functional pots you can truly use. Along the way, Brooke will share her love of slip and narrative surface, offering creative ways to personalize your work. With clear instructions and lots of encouragement, this class is all about building strong foundations and enjoying the process of making.


Handbuilding & Soda Firing: All Levels

Explore the world of sculptural ceramics with Alison Grevstad in this all-levels morning class. Focus on animals, abstraction, or figures—deciding how realistic or simplified you want your work to be. Alison will share tips and techniques to capture gesture, personality, and nuance, helping you bring your critters and figures to life. This class encourages observation, experimentation, and creative expression at every skill level.
As an optional bonus adventure, each student will receive a full share in the soda kiln—a 6" x 6" x 12" box of ceramics fired during the 7th week (May 13th) at our sister studio, Rat City Studios.


Continuing Wheel Throwing

Expand your throwing skills in this continuing wheel-throwing class with Jody! We will build upon the foundational basics of throwing to create a sure footing and build strength in your wheel skills, wedging, pulling, and more. Move into taller and wider forms with confidence, and learn ways to accentuate your thrown pottery forms with slip, carving, and glaze. We’ll cover projects like tall cylinders, bowls, plates/platters, and teapots.


Wheel & Hand Blend: All Levels

Thursdays, 6:00pm-9:00pm, $485
Ready to brush up on your clay skills and explore new surfaces? In this class for folks at any level, Anika will guide you through wheel throwing and handbuilding an abundance of bowls! All the while introducing a variety of surface techniques—including slips, underglazes, and washes—that bring depth and vibrancy to different bowl and basket forms.
