Wheel Throwing: All Levels
Wheel Throwing: All Levels
Instructor: Steph Cao
Dates: June 17th-August 19th, 2026
Time: Wednesdays, 10:00am-1:00pm
Fees: $485 (does not include tools, clay, or sales tax)
This all-levels wheel class with Steph Cao focuses thrown forms, with an emphasis on cups, bottles, and decorative vessels. Students will build on their existing skills while learning to create more intentional, elegant shapes on the wheel. Steph will also introduce painterly approaches to surface, using slips, underglazes, and washes to develop layered, expressive finishes. Demonstrations and guided practice will support both form and surface development throughout the session. This class is ideal for students ready to push their throwing skills further while exploring more expressive approaches to decoration. Participants will have the special opportunity to fire two small bottles (up to 5” tall x 5” wide) in the soda kiln at our sister studio Rat City Studios. (They will be glazed at RCC with a special selection of glazes and brought as a group over to RCS before the soda-firing). This class is ideal for students ready to strengthen their fundamentals while adding more intention and character to their work, and for those who want a taste of the soda-kiln!
All Levels Welcome! You must be 15+ years of age to participate. This class is a great fit for those wanting to grow their skills with an instructor present to ask questions. There is a 15” maximum size, in any direction, when creating with clay at RCC.
Materials: Clay is $40 for new clay or at times we have recycled clay for sale for $20. This is a separate purchase from your class fee. Purchase clay ahead of time HERE.
Bring an apron, comfy clothes, a quart-sized container (like a yogurt container), and a beginner's set of tools to the first class.
Tool kits are available for purchase online or at Seattle Pottery Supply or Clay Art Center. Or here is another option on Amazon. The class fee includes all glazing materials, firings, and generous open-studio access for practice time.
About Steph Cao (she/her):
Steph Cao is a ceramicist who creates handmade pieces out of her studio in Seattle, WA. Her work is inspired by natural elements and mid-century modern design. The clay pot she made at five years old sparked an interest in working with her hands and her passion for ceramics bloomed during her first college studio class. Steph has a BFA in Architecture + Design, and a minor in Studio Arts with an emphasis in ceramics. When Steph is not at the wheel, she loves to bake bread, do plant girl things, and hang with her dog, Ken.
All pieces are wheel thrown or occasionally hand-built. They are microwave and oven safe. As with all handmade goods, each is unique and carry it's own character. They are functional ceramics that are meant to be practical as well as beautiful for everyday use.
