Ten-week classes include generous practice hours outside of class. One-day classes are a great way to see what clay is all about and do not come with practice time outside of class.
Projects are limited to 15” in any direction. We encourage consistent attendance—there are no make-up classes. However, you may use your practice time to connect with classmates and instructors to build on what you have learned.
All sessional class participants use Clay Q&A, our online communication hub, for kiln schedules, asking questions, studio events, deadlines, and resources.
Level of Instruction:
Level One
A welcoming introduction to clay, with a focus on foundational throwing or handbuilding techniques. Demonstrations and projects are designed for beginners and those developing or building on new skills. We recommend taking Level One 2–4 times before moving into Level Two as you build confidence and a strong foundation.
Level Two
For students ready to build on foundational skills. Classes focus on developing the throwing or handbuilding skills needed to make forms up to 5" tall. Repeating Level Two classes is encouraged as you continue to develop control and consistency.
Level Three
For students with established intermediate clay skills. This level is a good fit after multiple Level One and Level Two classes. Projects may explore replication, larger forms, more demanding techniques, and intentional surface development. Level Three embraces increased complexity and scale, with skills that support making forms up to 8" tall.

Tile Making Workshop with Terri Goodwin
Description
Join Terri Goodwin for a two-day, hands-on workshop focused on building layered relief clay tiles. Participants in this workshop will be led through the design process, bringing the design to clay, and a host of techniques to create tiles with dimension and life.
Technical skills that Terri will share are how to keep tiles flat and stable while developing depth through overlapping forms, and considering how color, contrast, and relief work together to create a dynamic surface.
Participants may make one larger tile or a set of mural-type tiles that are part of a larger whole. Each tile is limited to 12” in any direction for single tiles. Multi-tile murals are limited to 20” in any direction in total (For instance 3 tiles need to be no larger than 20” together in total).
This workshop offers time to experiment, refine your process, and develop a body of work with depth and dimension with an amazing experienced guide.
Why this workshop stands out:
Learn from a local. full-time artist. Terri has worked out so many challenges in this way of working with clay. Come glean a host of tips and tricks from an amazing artisan! She made the tiles around the front door at Rain City Clay!
Who should attend:
This is an all levels workshop. Jump right in and explore. If you are more experienced, bring a more complicated design idea and bring it into being with Terri guiding steps and making suggestions for success.
General Workshop Participant Info
Lunches - We will have 1/2 hour breaks for lunch. Please pack yourself a lunch in a cooler if needed. We do have one microwave and one toaster oven, but there are lots of people in the workshop, so there could be a line to use these appliances. A simple sandwich might be best.
Curiosity and patience - we will be working in a group and learning from the efforts of everyone. Please come willing to be part of this awesome community!
Tools and Materials
RCC will provide one bag of reclaimed clay (white-buff stoneware) per person. Participants may choose to purchase more clay, or bring their own light colored clay to work with. No dark/red clay bodies. Please manage your own reclaim for out-of-house clays. This workshop is a process-based workshop, and firing of artwork is not included.
PLEASE BRING your own set of tools for this workshop - here’s what we recommend!
Make sure your name or initials are written on all your items.
Journal & pen, sketchbook are always a good idea!
Banding Wheel (if you are local, we have a few for those traveling)
About Terri Goodwin
Terri Goodwin is a West Seattle artist best known for combining her handcrafted ceramic tile with concrete resulting in unique mixed media wall art. Her interest in clay was sparked by her love for all things mosaic. Instead of hunting for ready made materials she could start from clay and create anything imaginable. Terri founded Bright River Studio in 2010 where she continues to carve leather hard clay with a variety of additive and subtractive sculpting techniques creating low relief tile in multiple shapes. Glazed with colorful commercial glazes her tiles reflect the movement and patterns found in the natural world.
Artist Statement
The continual pull I feel as an artist is one of striving to represent my unique experience of nature and its many botanical wonders. Pattern, movement and color are some of the elements I choose to highlight using scale, texture and a narrowed focus. Whether I’m carving directly from a slab or adding layers to carve and shape, I’m always thinking about how to call attention to that little bit of beauty nature has so generously provided.
