What a Relief!: All Levels
Instructor Terri Goodwin
Tuesday 5:00-7:00pm
Sept 17-Nov 19th
$425 (does not include clay)

Join our ceramics class and explore the art of low relief surfaces through carving, sculpting, spriging and more. Create decorative tile, wall sculpture or a small mosaic mural.

Whether you're a total beginner or continuing with clay, all levels are welcome to learn and refine their skills with clay. Unleash your creativity and learn techniques to add depth to your pieces under expert guidance.

From bathroom walls to outdoor murals, tiles or wall sculptures are a beautiful and long-lasting way to protect a surface or tell a story. Terri will give guidance on basic clay working techniques including managing slabs, ways to avoid warping in the drying process, and lots of
surface design techniques. We'll talk about ways to mount and present individual tiles and mosaic murals.

In addition, you will be introduced to plaster casting. You will make an open-faced mold of your carved tile or elements for spriging. The cast design must stay within 5” in any direction. Plaster and casting equipment for this project will be provided.

Students may make multiples, but this is not a class to make tiles for your whole kitchen or bathroom project. Come wanting to learn and explore techniques!

Eligibility: All Levels Welcome! You must be 15+ years of age to participate. There is a 15” maximum size, in any direction, when creating with clay at RCC.

Materials: Clay is $40 for new clay or at times we have recycled clay for sale for $15.
This is a separate purchase from your class fee. Purchase clay HERE and we will have it in your cubby on the first day of class.

Plaster: Your class fee includes 5 pounds of plaster for making one mold. Additional plaster can be purchased from a local supplier. Mold making is very dusty. Prepare to bring a mask during the mold-making class. Mold making is only an option with the instructor. Molds may not be cast/ plaster may not be used in the studio outside of class.

Bring an apron, comfy clothes, a quart-sized container (like a yogurt container), and a beginner's set of tools to the first class.

Tool kits are available for purchase online or at SPS or CAC. Or here is another option on Amazon. The class fee includes all glazing materials, firings, and generous open-studio access for practice time. All levels welcome - come join the fun!

About the Instructor:
Taught by Terri Goodwin (she/her)

Terri Goodwin is a West Seattle artist best known for her handcrafted ceramic tile paired with concrete bedding. Her interest in clay was originally sparked by her love for all things mosaic and has evolved into producing her own ceramic tile pieces. Employing a variety of sculpting techniques combined with vibrant, commercial glazes, her tiles reflect the movement, patterns, and textures found in the natural world. The resulting unique mixed-media pieces can be found indoors or out throughout the country. Terri’s Bright River Studio is a long-time fixture at several regional venues such as the Alki Art Fair and West Side Artists Studio Tour. She relishes the interaction with the public at these events and considers it an important component of her work.
