Decorative Design: Continuing Wheel
Instructor: Jennifer “Fuj” Fujimoto
Tuesday 7:30pm-9:30pm
Sept 17-Nov 19th
$425 (does not include clay)

Designed for those continuing with wheel-throwing techniques, this course explores the intricacies of creating functional and decorative vessels. The class will start by refining simple forms like bowls and move on to thoughtfully designed jars and other decorative forms.

Under Jennifer’s helpful instruction, you’ll hone your wheel-throwing techniques, experiment with decorative elements, and explore the art of shaping closed forms. This class offers a supportive environment to elevate your craftsmanship and unleash your creativity. Don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired and motivated to transform clay into personalized works of art with “guest instructor” Jennifer Fujimoto’s guidance.

Eligibility: Recommended for those with one or more throwing classes. You must be 15+ years of age to participate. This class is a great fit for those wanting to grow their skills with an instructor present to ask questions. There is a 15” maximum size, in any direction, when creating with clay at RCC.

Materials: Clay is $40 for new clay or at times we have recycled clay for sale for $15.
This is a separate purchase from your class fee. Purchase clay HERE and we will have it in your cubby on the first day of class.

Bring an apron, comfy clothes, a quart-sized container (like a yogurt container), and a beginner's set of tools to the first class.

Tool kits are available for purchase online or at SPS or CAC. Or here is another option on Amazon. The class fee includes all glazing materials, firings, and generous open-studio access for practice time. All levels welcome - come join the fun!

About the Instructor
Jennifer “ Fuj” Fujimoto (she/her)
My work is an invitation. An invitation to take life less seriously and have fun. To let go of who we think we're supposed to be and embrace who we are. It is an invitation to connect with each other through courage and curiosity.

I am an enthusiastic participant in processes that cannot be rushed - ceramics, printmaking, and textiles. Each medium informs and inspires the others. I shape, carve, and print, finding pleasure in the flow of these slow, meditative activities. I draw inspiration from the folk art traditions of Japan to connect to my heritage. I play with form, color, and symbol, layering and repeating until they evolve into my own language. A stray mark or awkward shape becomes a new word in my vocabulary. I resist judging and enjoy the journey.

My aesthetic is purposefully unsophisticated, childlike, and lighthearted.  It's a subtle reminder that by abandoning unrealistic expectations, we open ourselves up to finding joy in the little things.

Originally from Hawaii, and raised outside of Portland, OR, Jennifer Fujimoto completed her BFA in Graphic Communication Design at the University of Denver in 1996. For over 20 years, Jennifer worked as a graphic and user experience designer for companies such as Google, amazon.com, Starbucks, Microsoft, and Nike, playing a prominent role in shaping some of the most popular products and applications of our time.

In 2015, Jennifer took her first ceramics class at Pottery Northwest. There she discovered a passionate community of like-minded makers, and a medium that allowed her to apply her background in graphic design and enthusiasm for Japanese folk art and textiles to tangible and useful, handmade products.

She currently practices ceramics, design, and printmaking in Seattle, Washington and online at jenniferfujimoto.com.
