Wheels in Motion: Intro to Wheel throwing

Get your wheels turning as you learn the basics of throwing pots on the potter's wheel. This class will get you familiar with the material of clay and introduce foundational wheel-thrown forms such as bowls and cups. Try out surface decoration with our colorful shop glazes, wax resist, and tape resist techniques.

Whether you're a beginner or looking to expand your pottery skills, this class promises to be a fun and rewarding journey into the world of ceramics.

All Levels Welcome! You must be 15+ years of age to participate. This class is a great fit for those wanting to grow their skills with an instructor present to ask questions. There is a 15” maximum size, in any direction, when creating with clay at RCC.

Materials: Clay is $40 for new clay or at times we have recycled clay for sale for $20. This is a separate purchase from your class fee. Purchase clay ahead of time HERE.

• Special Materials:
  RCC will provide a 3”x 4” rubber carving block.

• You will need to buy your own cutting tool and any additional cutting blocks you wish to carve.

Bring an apron, comfy clothes, a quart-sized container (like a yogurt container), and a beginner's set of tools to the first class.

Tool kits are available for purchase online or at Seattle Pottery Supply or Clay Art Center. Or here is another option on Amazon. The class fee includes all glazing materials, firings, and generous open-studio access for practice time. Tools: Suggested tools are in the image on this class page.

About Finn Faydell Park (they/them):

Finn Faydell Park is a second-generation Korean potter whose work focuses primarily on functional vessels. After working and renting at Rain City Clay for several years, they moved to Tacoma in 2024 and began building a home studio. In their spare time, Finn can be found indoor bouldering, playing video games, and creating in other art mediums.
