Handbuilding Workshop with Sunshine Cobb

Description

Join celebrated ceramic artist and author Sunshine Cobb for a weekend of handbuilding, creative exploration, and clay-filled inspiration. Drawing from both historical ceramic traditions and contemporary practice, Sunshine's work explores a variety of handbuilding approaches, encouraging students to discover fresh possibilities within their own creative process.

Through demonstrations and discussion, Sunshine will explore a variety of construction methods, including coil and pinch techniques, hard- and soft-slab construction, and the assembly of components for building her distinctive functional forms. She will discuss how surface develops throughout the making process, as well as her approach to glaze and surface treatment.

At the heart of Sunshine's teaching is a process-over-product philosophy. This workshop is designed to foster creative expansion by encouraging participants to experiment with both traditional and unconventional handbuilding methods. Sunshine will explore how working within—and occasionally pushing beyond—the boundaries of ceramics can open new pathways for growth and discovery. Whether you are just beginning your clay journey or have years of studio experience, this approach offers valuable insights into developing a more playful, curious, and expansive practice.

In addition to technical demonstrations, Sunshine will share how inspiration, ideas, and abstract concepts find their way into her work, offering tools for cultivating a deeper connection between personal expression and functional pottery. Her thoughtful, engaging teaching style will leave participants energized, inspired, and eager to continue exploring the endless possibilities of clay.

Some experience with clay is helpful.

Artist Statement

I want my work in clay to represent growth and accomplishment, in which I believe reminiscence and nostalgia play a part. I rely on texture and color to create a sense of motion and time in my work. I hope to instill a sense of age, like one finds apparent in discarded objects, with the aim to infuse feelings of nostalgia and wanderlust in my ceramic objects. By exploring and creating vessels kept within arms reach, I hope to communicate how an objects significance can grow and change depending on the path of a persons life. And how the relationship between function and ornament shift throughout the course of a day/week/year. Through form and surface my goal is to communicate a sense of home and memory but also to evoke that feeling of wanderlust that has informed my own life and visual sensibilities. My work is at its very best when in use, flowers or food, the work comes to life and enhances any encounter.
